The American GI Forum was founded on March 26, 1948 in Corpus Chrisiti, Texas by Dr. Hector P. Garcia, an Army veteran medical doctor. The GI Forum was dedicated to addressing problems of discrimination and inequities endured by Mexican American veterans returning from the war. Through the sheer volunteer force of dedicated leaders and hardworking members, the GI Forum has become an advocate for veterans and hispanics to promote greater participation in civic affairs, equity income, educational attainment, employment, as well as providing pride, dignity and respect among all ethnic groups. The GI Forum has been in the forefront of major civil rights struggles to advocate for Hispanic veteran representation. Today the GI Forum has more than 500 chapters throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. The Sacramento Chapter of the GI Forum is dedicated to continue the works of Dr Hector Garcia by reaching out to community leaders, local business and veterans.
